The Hisense PX4 Pro (PX4PRO) is an ultra short throw laser TV. It stands on a low cabinet in front of the screen and projects 80 to 200 inches from red, green and blue lasers rated at up to 3,500 ANSI lumens. This listing, 100PX4PRO, pairs it with a 100″ (254 cm) ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen.

For 100 inches the back of the projector sits 177 mm from the screen surface, so the system needs no ceiling mount.

The 100-inch ALR screen, or a screen of your own

Hisense itself sells the PX4 Pro and its ALR screens separately. If your room already has a suitable screen, the Hisense PX4 Pro without a screen is listed separately, and the same projector is also listed with a 120-inch ALR screen. Hisense lists its Auto Screen Fit feature for screens from 100 to 120 inches, so both bundle sizes are covered.

If you use your own screen, check that its maker rates it for ultra short throw projectors. The PX4 Pro throws its light steeply upwards from below the picture. ALR screens built for this have a surface that reflects light arriving from below towards the audience and rejects light falling from above and the sides. Elite Screens, a screen maker, notes that some ALR materials made for conventional projectors do not work with ultra short throw models. A matt white screen shows a picture but rejects no room light.

Placement for a 100-inch picture

Hisense’s throw chart for the PX4 Pro gives these figures for a 100-inch 16:9 image:

  • Image size: 2,214 x 1,245 mm
  • Back of the projector to the screen surface: 177 mm
  • Bottom edge of the picture: 380 mm above the surface the projector stands on

The projector is 288 mm deep, so its front edge ends up about 465 mm out from the screen surface: allow for that in the depth of the cabinet. Hisense allows a 5% deviation on the chart, so fine-tune the position with the screen up. The image rises from the projector, so the cabinet height sets the picture height. The same chart gives 92 mm from the screen for an 80-inch image and 600 mm for 200 inches. The unit measures 540 x 288 x 142 mm, weighs 8.3 kg and draws 250 W.

Picture: RGB laser, brightness and HDR

The PX4 Pro uses separate red, green and blue lasers, which Hisense calls TriChroma, with a 0.47-inch DMD chip and a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) output. Hisense rates it at up to 3,500 ANSI lumens, a figure it describes as peak brightness, and at 118% of the BT.2020 colour space. With its seven-level iris, Hisense rates contrast at 6,500:1.

The projector decodes Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, carries IMAX Enhanced certification and has a Filmmaker Mode. 3D works with active glasses.

Gaming, connections and sound

Two of the four HDMI inputs are HDMI 2.1 with auto low latency mode (ALLM); the other two are HDMI 2.0. Hisense lists 4K at 60 Hz, variable refresh rate from 48 to 240 Hz at 1080p and AMD FreeSync Premium certification.

  • USB: one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port
  • Network: Gigabit LAN, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4
  • Audio out: eARC on HDMI 3 and one optical output
  • Mirroring and control: AirPlay and Miracast, Control4 compatible

Six built-in speakers with a combined maximum of 66 W, calibrated by Devialet, decode Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. For more sound, the eARC port or the optical output feeds one of our sound bars or an AV receiver. The smart platform is Hisense’s VIDAA; the streaming apps on Hisense’s US spec sheet may differ on South African units.

Questions about the Hisense PX4 Pro

Does the PX4 Pro support 4K at 120 Hz for a PS5 or Xbox Series X?

No. Hisense lists 4K at 60 Hz as the top refresh rate at full resolution; its 48 to 240 Hz variable refresh range applies at 1080p. Connect the console to one of the two HDMI 2.1 inputs, the ones Hisense lists with ALLM, so the console can switch the projector to its low-latency mode when a game starts.

Does it need a dark room?

No, but the screen decides how well it copes. An ALR screen made for ultra short throw projectors rejects much of the light falling from above and the sides, which a matt white screen reflects. Light that still reaches the screen greys the blacks on any projection screen, so films with dark scenes look best with the lights down and curtains drawn.

Are 3D glasses included?

No. Hisense lists active 3D support, but the box contents on its spec sheet are a voice remote with batteries, a power cable, a quick start guide and a cleaning kit, with the full manual online. Buy active 3D glasses separately and check they support this projector before you order.

How long does the laser last?

Hisense rates the light source at more than 25,000 hours, which it equates to over 12,500 two-hour films. There is no lamp to replace.
